Day 1 - Russ the Trainer

I have been looking for a personal trainer that would come to my house for quite some time. I have almost all the equipment that I had used at Lifetime since my old trainer was more into free weights and Yoga. I had all but given up on the whole idea because I could just never get connected with someone or they were outrageous as far as pricing. Through one of my many conversations about food and exercise with a friend, I found out she knew someone that would be perfect.

So, I got the number and gave him a call. We chatted, he is a little outside my wheelhouse, so I was intrigued. But I will touch on that more on Day 2. After setting up an appointment, I found out he and his wife are also friends with many of my theatre crew. To me, health nut and theatre geek is a great combination, I know that he is certified in nutrition and that he is outgoing if he likes to step on the stage. I have had plenty of trainers that had zero personality and hated working out with them. So, I was excited.

The big day arrives and I am geared up to workout and get my butt in gear. I open the door and find out that my trainer is...attractive. First, remember he is married, so everyone calm down. I was not looking for a date. However, whether or not he is single does not matter, it's like you are inherently self consciousness when you have to workout with someone of the opposite sex who is not only in shape but also attractive. You become all too aware of how fat and uncoordinated you are. To be quite honest, most of my other trainers were women and the men that helped me may have been in great shape but were not attractive and were duds on personality.

I managed to break a sweat .2 seconds into the workout. Then my fantastic knee problem presented itself, so we will go with a no on the squats. When I decided to take a moment to contemplate the pain in my knee, I suddenly got very, VERY light headed and refused to do anything except sit down. Oh my God, is this really happening? I feel like such a toolbox. I knew I was out of shape, but I didn't realize that I had a Biggest Loser moment lined up for my first workout.

To his credit, Russ was great. He and I talked nutrition after my amazing show of athletic prowess. He told me about his weight loss and how he did it which is the basis for Spike84, his nutrition/workout business. He did a good job of making me feel less self conscious, but I think the thing that helped the most was that he really reminded me of my friend, Brian, so it was a little like I was talking to an old friend.

I start the nutrition portion tomorrow. We'll see how it goes.
